At Vascular Specialists of Central Florida (VSCF), our providers offer safe, effective sclerotherapy to treat spider veins, small varicose veins, and other venous conditions.
Varicose veins affect about 35% of people in the U.S., often causing discomfort, cosmetic concerns, or both. For many, sclerotherapy provides a minimally invasive way to restore confidence and improve leg appearance—without surgery.
What Is Sclerotherapy?
Sclerotherapy treats spider veins, small varicose veins, and related venous conditions by injecting a sclerosant—a medical solution—into the affected vein. This causes the vein to collapse and fade over time as blood naturally reroutes to healthier vessels.
Session length: About 30 minutes in an outpatient setting.
Typical plan: Most people need a series of treatments spaced a few weeks apart for best results.
Understanding Spider Veins & Small Varicose Veins
Spider veins are thin, web-like red or purple veins near the skin’s surface. Small varicose veins are slightly larger and can appear raised or twisted. Causes include genetics, age, pregnancy, and long periods of standing.
Sclerotherapy can improve both the appearance and mild discomfort these veins may cause.
Side Effects & Safety
- Small raised bumps at the injection site
- Bruising or mild soreness
- Temporary skin discoloration or “staining” spots
- Mild itching or redness
Your VSCF provider will review potential side effects and aftercare before treatment.
Are You a Candidate?
You may be a good candidate for sclerotherapy if you:
- Are in good overall health
- Are not pregnant or breastfeeding
Your provider will evaluate your medical history, medications, and vein health to determine if sclerotherapy is right for you.
What to Expect at VSCF

- Who performs it: Cosmetic sclerotherapy is typically performed by our nurse practitioner (NP) or physician assistant (PA).
- During treatment: You’ll lie comfortably while your provider injects sclerosant into the visible veins. You may feel brief stinging or cramping. The area may be gently massaged to distribute the solution.
- After treatment: You can walk right away and return to daily activities.
Aftercare & Results
- Compression: Wear compression stockings or leggings (20–30 mmHg) continuously for at least 72 hours (including overnight), removing only to bathe; continue daytime wear for 2–3 weeks.
- Activity: Walk 15–20 minutes daily for several days; avoid intense lower-body exercise briefly after treatment.
- Avoid: Sun exposure on treated areas, hot baths, saunas, and hot tubs for 2 weeks.
- Timeline: Veins fade gradually; most people need 2–4 sessions spaced about 4 weeks apart.

- 30-minute session: $250 (up to 3 ampules)

Is Sclerotherapy Right for You?
Sclerotherapy is an excellent option for spider veins and small varicose veins, but larger veins may require other treatments. While it doesn’t prevent new veins from forming, periodic touch-ups and lifestyle changes can help maintain results.
